Marmaris is one of Turkeys most popular destinations and its easy to see why. Its a vibrant resort but, at the same time, its very easy to find quieter, more laid back places, like Icmeler, just a short boat ride away across the bay. What was once a small, sleepy fishing village is now a major resort in its own right and boasts a range of excellent facilities and an imposing sea front and marina.
Theres something for everyone in Marmaris and it really does cater for all ages and all tastes. Theres a wide selection of accommodation from family-run pensions and apartments to 5 star hotels. Theres great shopping, a weekly market, superb excursions and boat trips, a huge range of local and international restaurants and some of the best nightlife in the Mediterranean.
Any time between April and October is a good time to go although the resort will be less crowded and less hot if you avoid July and August. The weather is perfect in May and June with long days and the temperature just about ideal. In September and October, the high season summer crowds have gone and the sea is at its warmest.
Marmaris enjoys a stunning setting between the azure Aegean Sea and dramatic, pine-clad mountains. A narrow beach of sand and shingle runs for approximately 7 kms along the seafront, part of which is bordered by an attractive palm-shaded promenade. Theres an excellent local transport service to nearby towns and villages and boats regularly cross the bay to Icmeler. Apart from the huge selection of shops and restaurants, theres also a bazaar in the old part of town, an attractive marina and great nightlife.
From humble doner kebab stalls to superb international restaurants, from family-run cafes to sophisticated cocktail bars, Marmaris has a selection of places to eat and drink to satisfy just about every taste. Theres something for everyone and youd need a month to go through all the nationalities speciality dishes on offer.
In Marmaris youre spoilt for things to do and see and, apart from the numerous boat trips available, you can also visit and / or try your hand at white water rafting, Jeep Safari, Turkish Bath, Dalyan (the Kaunos rock tombs and mud baths), Ephesus & Pamukkale and Rhodes (in Greece) by hydrofoil.
There are bars and night clubs to appeal to all tastes in the resort centre, around the harbourfront (located between the marina and the old town square), in the old shopping area and in the famous Bar Street. From jazz to pop, from classical to rock, there is definitely something for you. For serious shoppers the bazaar is the magnet with a wide array of shops and stalls selling everything from local spices to the finest leather jackets.
