Alanyas situation, on Turkeys southern Mediterranean coast, could not be better. It lies along two sweeping bays separated by a dramatic headland on which is found the imposing Alanya Castle an old Ottoman fortress dating back to the 13th century. In the old town youll find little Turkish cafes, boutiques and a selection of bars and restaurants. Youll also find modern hotels and great beach amenities.
Alanyas two fabulous beaches are the big attraction, stretching out either side of the promontory and castle which dominate the resort. Here, youll find every possible type of water sport together with beach bars and seafront restaurants and cafes. Alanya also boats a great selection of late night bars where you can dance till dawn and theres really good shopping and sightseeing, too.
With its superb year-round climate, Alanya is a great place to visit at any time of the year. Winters are very mild and its usually dry and warm, with just the occasional shower from November to March. From April to November, the weather is hot and sunny although the resort will be less crowded and less hot if you avoid July and August. The weather is perfect in May and June with long days and an ideal temperature. In September and October, the high season summer crowds have gone and the sea is at its warmest.
Alanya enjoys a great setting with its two fabulous beaches and imposing castle dividing them from its position on top of the headland which overlooks the resort. From the castle there are spectacular views of Alanya, the sea and the Taurus Mountains which rise to around 10,000 feet behind the coastal plain. The old town, near the castle, is full of narrow streets to explore and theres an attractive harbour which is the centre for local fishing, boat hire and market stalls selling gold, leather, clothes and carpets.
From small, family-run cafes to excellent international restaurants, from fast-food outlets to sophisticated cocktail bars, Alanya has a wide selection of places to eat and drink to satisfy every taste. Theres something for everyone, including delicious local Turkish cuisine and restaurants serving dishes from around the Mediterranean and beyond.
Theres a good selection of things to do and see in and around Alanya and, apart from boat trips from the harbour which are very popular, you can also try a jeep safari and horse-back riding. An exciting trip is to the Dalmatas Caves where youll find stalacmites and stalactites. A little further afield, must-see places to visit are Perge, the sunken city of Aspendos and the unique region of Cappadocia.
There are bars and night clubs to appeal to all tastes in and around Alanya. From jazz to pop to rock, there is definitely something for everyone. And serious shoppers are very well catered for with a wide selection of shops and stalls selling everything from gold and spices to carpets and the finest leather jackets.
