Holidays in Side

Side Introduction

Side (pronounced ‘see-day’) is one of Turkey’s most popular resorts and it’s very easy to see why. It’s located on Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast and lies along two beautiful beaches separated by a low headland on which is situated the old town of Side and its fantastic amphitheatre dating from the 2nd century A.D. In the old town you’ll find little Turkish cafes, boutiques and a selection of bars and restaurants. Around the bays you’ll also find modern hotels and great beach amenities.

Why Choose Side?

A superb year-round climate and two fabulous beaches are Side’s big attractions. The beaches stretch out along two sweeping bays which are to be found either side of the promontory and amphitheatre which dominate the resort, and here you’ll find every possible type of water sport together with beach bars and seafront restaurants and cafes. Side also has a good selection of shops and, in the old town, you’ll find traditional architecture with stone houses and ornate wooden balconies.

Best Time to Travel

With its excellent year-round climate, Side is a great place to visit at any time of the year. Winters are very mild and it’s usually dry and warm, with just the occasional shower from November to March. From April to November, the weather is hot and sunny although the resort will be less crowded and less hot if you avoid July and August. The weather is perfect in May, June, September and October with long, sunny days and ideal temperatures.

The Resort

Side enjoys a superb location with its two lovely beaches and an imposing amphitheatre located on a flat headland between the beaches. From the amphitheatre there are lovely views of Side, the sea and the mountains which rise behind the coastal plain. The old town, near the amphitheatre, is full of narrow streets to explore and there’s an attractive harbour which is the centre for local fishing, boat hire and a sprinkling of local restaurants.

Eating & Drinking

From local cafes to first class international restaurants, from fast-food outlets to sophisticated cocktail bars, Side has a wide selection of places to eat and drink to satisfy every taste. There’s something for everyone, including delicious local Turkish cuisine and restaurants serving dishes from around the Mediterranean and beyond. And don’t forget to try the local ice cream which is a delicacy of the region and is delicious.

Excursions

There’s a very good choice of excursions and sightseeing which can be arranged from Side including boat trips along the picturesque coastline, horse-back riding and the Manavgat river tour. ‘Must-see’ places to visit are the ancient city of Perge, the sunken city of Aspendos, fascinating Termessos and the unique region of Cappadocia.

Night Life & Shopping

There are bars and night clubs to appeal to all tastes in and around Side. From rock to pop, from classical to folk, there is definitely something for everyone. And serious shoppers are very well catered for with a wide selection of shops and stalls selling everything from gold and spices to beautiful Turkish rugs and the finest leather jackets.
